About TravellerShield

1. Who can buy TravellerShield?

Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents, Foreigners with valid employment pass/work permit aged 18 years and above and residing in Singapore can buy TravellerShield.

TravellerShield covers a round trip commencing from and returning to Singapore within the period of insurance.

2. What is Family Cover?

A Family Cover comprises the Insured, his/her legal spouse and all their legal Child(ren) who are travelling together on a Journey.

In the case of Family Cover, a Child means the Adult applicant's legal Child who is above 1 month old and below 18 years or up to 23 years of age provided the Child is unmarried, unemployed and is studying full time in a recognised institution of higher learning, at the commencement of any Journey.

If you bought an Annual Policy, the Insured Persons under the Family Cover are not required to travel together on a Journey, but any Child Insured Person under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or Adult Guardian for any Journey made during the Period of Insurance.

3. Can I buy Individual Cover for my Child only?

Yes, you can buy Individual Cover for your legal Child if he/she is above 1 month old and below 18 years at the commencement of any Journey.

However, if the Child is under the age of 12 years, a parent or Adult guardian must accompany the Child during the Journey. The benefits payable under the Policy will be subject to the limit for Child Insured Person.

4. What is a Single Return Trip Policy?

A Single Return Trip Policy covers the entire return trip (not exceeding 180 consecutive days) from the time during the Period of Insurance that the Insured Person leaves his/her Home or workplace in Singapore for the sole purpose of commencing a trip abroad to three (3) hours after the Insured Person arrives back in Singapore or on the expiry date of the Period of Insurance shown in the Schedule, whichever is sooner.

5. What is an Annual Policy?

If you travel frequently, buy an Annual Policy for attractive savings and convenience as you are automatically covered for all your trips taken during the Period of Insurance. You can make unlimited number of trips during the Period of Insurance, provided each trip does not exceed 90 consecutive days from the departure date.

If you bought a Family Annual Policy, the Insured Persons under the Family Cover are not required to travel together on a Journey. However, any Child Insured Person under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by a parent or Adult Guardian for any Journey.

6. How do I select the Travel Region if I am travelling to more than one country?

We have divided the world into three areas. If you are going to more than one country, please select the furthest “Area” from Singapore in your itinerary as your destination. For example, if you are travelling to Thailand and USA, please select “Area 3” as USA is classified under Area 3.

Area 1: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Area 2: Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, including countries in Area 1.
Area 3: Worldwide including countries in Area1 and Area 2.

7. I am above 70 years old. Can I buy TravellerShield?

Yes, you can buy a Single Trip TravellerShield Policy. For Insured persons above 70 years old, there are specified sum insured amounts in order to enjoy certain benefits. Please refer to the Policy for details of coverage.

8. Can I buy TravellerShield at the airport just before departing from Singapore?

Yes, you can buy TravellerShield so long as you have not boarded the plane, provided at the time of applying the insurance you are not aware of any circumstances which are likely to lead to a claim.

9. Are leisure activities such as winter sport, snorkeling and trekking covered under TravellerShield?

Yes, TravellerShield Premier and Platinum Plans cover leisure adventurous activities such as bungee jumping, sky diving, paragliding, helicopter rides for sightseeing, hot air ballooning, jet skiing, mountaineering at mountains below the height of 3,000 metres above sea level, skiing within official approved areas of a ski resort, white water rafting with a qualified guide and below Grade 4 (of International Scale of River Difficulty), and scuba diving up to a maximum depth of 30 metres with a qualified diving instructor holding recognised diving certification. These activities must be done for leisure purposes and with a licensed operator.

10. Are there other exclusions under TravellerShield?

Yes, taking part in or practicing for speed / time trials, competitions, sprints or racing of any kind, or as a professional sportsperson (who earns income, remuneration or sponsorship from such activity). Organised team football, flying or other aerial activities (except where traveling as a fare paying passenger on a commercial airline) are also excluded.

Certain professions are also excluded, such as persons engaging in naval, military, air force, civil defence or Police services or operations, or persons employed as a manual work, or engaging in off-shore / in mining, aerial photography.

Before trip commences

You can only change the commencement date if you notify MSIG Insurance prior to the commencement of your trip or Period of Insurance, whichever is the sooner.

While overseas

Only trip extension is permissible once the trip commences. It is permitted midway during travel and within the period of insurance provided there are no known circumstances or events likely to lead to claim, subject to a minimum additional premium of S$10.

You should quote your full name and NRIC/Passport No. for identification. Please ensure you receive a confirmation from MSIG Insurance for the changes and pay the additional premium, if applicable. There will be no refund of premium for any changes.

12. Will there be any refund of premium if I cancel my policy?

For a Single Return Trip Policy, you may cancel the policy at any time prior to commencement of the Period of Insurance, provided no claims is made and MSIG Insurance will retain a minimum premium of $50.

For an Annual Policy, you may cancel your policy at any time during the Period of Insurance by giving 7 days written notice to MSIG Insurance. If at the time of cancellation the policy is in force for 180 days or less, you will be entitled to a refund of premium based on our short period rates (as stated in the Policy) provided no claim is made. No refund is allowed if your policy is in force for more than 180 days.

13. How do I make a claim?

  • If you are overseas and require any emergency assistance, you can call MSIG Assist 24 Hour Hotline

  • If you wish to file a claim on your insurance, you have to do so within one month upon your return to Singapore. Please lodge your claim with MSIG Claims Department as soon as you return to Singapore from your overseas trip.
  • A "Travel Insurance Claim Form" will be sent to you for completion. You can also download and print the claim form here.
  • Return the completed "Travel Insurance Claim Form" to MSIG General Claims Department together with the supporting documents.

14. When should I apply for the Single Trip Plan?

Travel must commence no later than 182 days from date of application for Single Trip Plan.

2. How do I pay by Credit Card?

  • You can purchase TravellerShield Insurance with any of your credit cards. Please disable the pop-up blocker for the transaction to go through smoothly.

3. How do I know that my application has been successfully processed?

  • You will receive an electronic receipt once your payment and transaction is successfully processed. You will also receive an email acknowledgement if you have provided an email address.

4. When will I receive my policy?

  • You will receive your TravellerShield policy document via your email once your application has been successfully processed. You may also download a copy of the specimen Policy terms and conditions from here.
